The New Year is a great time for a refresh. Whether you’re looking to overhaul your routine or simply cut down on wasted space in your home, decluttering now sets the tone for the year ahead. New organization, new you – not as catchy as new year, new you, but it’s true!

Here are 3 of our top tips to get the most out of decluttering your home and life for the New Year:

1.) Start small, but most importantly, just start.

If this is your first foray into organizing, it can be easy to get overwhelmed by just how much of your home could benefit from organizing. The best way to start is to do just that; start! Pick a room or space (it doesn’t have to be a whole room, you can choose even just a drawer), take everything out of it (and we mean everything), purge what you no longer used, expired and worn out items, and categorize. If necessary and possible, invest in a few organizing game-changers like baskets or drawer dividers to add containment and separation. When you’re done with said room/space, celebrate! It’s no easy task and the reward is worth celebrating. Use that momentum to keep going and before you know it, you’re on a roll.

2.) Fine-tune your routine to fit your needs.

Chances are that there are parts of your routine that could benefit from a refresh. Starting the New Year with a different routine is great, but the newness is subject to fade if it’s not something you’re used to. This is why we suggest taking your current routine plus what works for you and fine-tuning it. For example, if you’re a cup of coffee in the morning type of person, are all of your necessities in the same general area in the kitchen or are you going all over the place to grab what you need? Consider a coffee station or even designating a space in your cabinets for your coffee and mugs. Take a look at what you do every day and find ways to cut down on the time it takes to do them and enjoy all of your saved time doing something you enjoy, like 10 minutes to read your favorite book in the morning!

3.) Create systems and stick to them.

The key to keeping your home/life organized is to create systems while you’re organizing. The reason you’ve had to organize the same junk drawer every few months is because you haven’t created a system to keep it organized. This goes for all the different ways you can organize – the final product remains that way when you give yourself the tools to maintain it. A top system we employ when organizing for our clients is to put things back where they came from. A lot of disorganization comes from things not having a specific space in your home. Once you create this space for your items, it becomes easier to keep your space organized as they all have a place to go back to once you’re done using them. Stick to the systems that you create while organizing, and come 12 months from now, you’re decluttering to-do list will be minimal!

We’re rooting for this to be your best, most organized year yet!  Share your before photo with a friend for accountability (or us on Instagram, @lifeinjeneral) and once you’re ready for your after photo, don’t forget to celebrate! DM us with your transformations so we can celebrate with you. If you’re looking for inspiration, we’ve just begun our January in Jeneral challenge that takes you through a new organizing challenge on the daily for the month of January. In our opinion, there’s no better way to start the year! Happy New Yea
